As you may have already come to realise, things are not as they once were. Life is different now than it was a decade ago, and we are miles beyond where we were pre 2000. Life changes, things become different each year – that’s a fact. It is true now, and will be true every year to come for the rest of our lives, because life happens and as a species we are fantastic at quickly developing and progressing by creating new technologies to ‘make our lives easier’.
Has your hypnosis business adapted with time?
As hypnotists/hypnotherapists, we all know things are constantly changing. and most of us will happily change things in our personal lives as and when needed. For example, we adapt to new technology, most of us get a new phone every couple of years with lots of different functionality to learn. We also learn new ways of behaving depending on current socio-economic memes and trends. Why then do many hypnotists and hypnotherapists ignore the fact that life is rapidly moving forwards, when they think about their hypnosis businesses, branding and marketing assets?
Outdated hypnosis assets become liabilities
Go on the internet and you will find many hypnosis websites that are plagued with old and outdated branding, styling, logos and even out-of-date information about hypnosis services that are no longer relevant or even available. Not only do outdated business assets look poor, but they can also negatively impact on your bottom line as a business owner.
Today is the future, and we have the technology to do amazing things from the comfort of our own homes and often with just a couple of clicks of a button. In the next 20 minutes, any of us could set the wheels in motion to have a new business website created (or an old one brought up to date), we could have a striking bespoke logo designed, an up-to-date payment system created, a slick testimonials system linked to our websites or a professionally edited show reel delivered to us – all through the magic of the internet. We could take all of our business assets and drag them (sometimes kicking and screaming) into the modern world, to refresh and revitalise our businesses and to make everything that we offer congruent with who we are now and how we want our business assets to reflect our current businesses.
This is nothing new, in fact, it’s what all the big companies have been doing for decades:
When running a business, you need to stay current and fit your brand to the times, regardless of whether you’re running a billion-dollar corporation, you’re the local hypnotherapist in your small town, or you’re anywhere in between. Your business assets say a lot about you and about the quality of the services that you offer. You may have noticed that I recently did a huge overhaul of my web presence and assets, because just like other hypnosis business owners, I too have to move with the times!
Branding (or re-branding) your hypnosis business
At the current time, people are bombarded with information, and because of that a couple of things have happened. Firstly, people (on the whole) have much shorter attention spans than we used to, which means business assets that are clean, modern and easy to interact with will better help to convert people into paying customers. Secondly, people are used to the concept of ‘branding’ and will often expect business assets to be congruent with one another along the same theme (your brand).
As an example, part of my own ‘Rory Z’ branding is that I often use a picture of myself on my products and marketing materials, because I like people to know who Rory Z actually is, rather than my brand just being a ‘name’. On my original rapid hypnosis book, I had a picture of myself from 2013 on the front cover. However, over time my overall image changed, so in 2018, I changed the book to remove the old (or should I say, ‘young’) picture of me from the cover, and re-branded the cover to look more like my hypnotherapy book (including a more up-to-date picture of me in the book itself and on the back cover). I then re-branded it again in 2021, so that it was even more on brand, with the ‘Rory Z green’ colour:
As well as updating the cover art, the book content included a bunch of pictures from 2013. To bring the content up to date for the expanded third edition of the book in 2021, I decided that I’d remove all of the old pictures from inside the book (below left), and replace them with all new cartoon-style images (below right). The reason I went to that effort is because I am a part of my brand, and the old pictures didn’t reflect what I look like these days!
It might not be easy, but it is worth it!
Updating all the images in my book was an absolute pain in the… well, you know. BUT, it has been absolutely worth it, because now I have a business asset that is totally congruent with my current brand. Also, with all the changes I’ve made (as well as re-writing the book to make sure it’s congruent with the way I perform rapid inductions nowadays), it is a much stronger product overall.
So, if you’ve been putting off updating your assets because it might be a bit of work, then I’ve got one piece of advice for you:
Suck it up and do it!
…and if you can’t do it, find someone who can do it for you.
Whether you ask someone you know or hire a professional, taking action is better than letting your business assets become outdated and obsolete. Learn how to do what needs doing, or outsource it to someone that’s already an expert. There are many online services out there where you can find people who can help you – often for a very affordable fee – but my favourite and the one I use most often has to be Fiverr, where you can outsource graphic design, web design, marketing media creation, you name it, you can get someone to do it for you!
So, why not make this your year for bringing your business assets up to date and opening a whole new world of possibilities?
You’ll be glad you did!
